Wind speed - Making an anemometer.

Anemometer

MATERIALS

  1. 4 Styrofoam cups
  2. 1 pin
  3. 4 straws
  4. tape
  5.   pencil

STEPS

  1. connect  2 of the straws together and do to the other 2
  2. poke a hole in all 4 cups
  3.   put the straws as a cross
  4.   poke the straws in to the hole in the cups
  5. put the pin through the straws
  6. and poke it in to the rubber of the pencil
Once you have made an anemometer we are going to record the wind speed.

Group size: 5

You will need:

Anemometer (above)

Roles:

  • Timekeeper
  • Counter
  • Recorder
  • Anemometer Manager
  • Wind generator
  1. Mount the anemometer in a place that has full access to the wind from all directions.
  2. When the time keeper says "Go", the counter in each group will count how many times the marked cup passes them in one minute and write it down.
  3. If possible, repeat the above step four (4) times and record the average number of spins on the chart.

FINDINGS

  • Record how many times it spins using the table below.
You will need to create the wind yourself by blowing. Get 4 different wind speeds by blowing.

You will need to time them and count the number of spins.

Time IntervalNumber of Spins
1.108
2.1048
3.1042
4.10120
  • Can you make a statement connecting the number of spins of your anemometer and the speed of the wind?

conclusion
when we put it all together the cups were unstable so we bent the straws so they would stay stable.
when we had only 2 straws they were way to close and did not spin properly.
so we joined 2 straws together so it could spin properly.
at the end we tried it and it worked so from there we had to find some wind or blow on it and count how many times it spun. we tried it when i heater was on.

R.R.R

Aim: To learn practical ways of recycling so that we can make our world a better place.

The Zero Waste Climate Solution

How can we prevent climate change by recycling these products?

Plastics:
Cycling or walking: using your car you are burning co2 and when you are walking or biking your not using co2
Paper: recycling paper means we don't do more deforestation
Steel: if you recycle steel you don't use that much coal

Video questions:

What is Zero Waste? one of the quickest and cheapest ways a community can immediately reduce climate impact

What can we do on the planet? we can fix broken things and reuse them

  1. reduce
  2. recycle
  3. reuse
  4. repair
  5. redesign

What do we need to recycle? plastic bottles, plastic cups, Styrofoam

What does recycling do? create less landfill

How much of our rubbish is food scraps? 40%

What does soil due to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? it brings back the carbon dioxide

What do we need to do?
  1.  Have Zero waste
How can you make your Carbon Footprint smaller? stop eating meat, unplug your devices, drive less, plant a garden

What is a carbon footprint? the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere

ENERGY SAVING TIPS FILM

Name 4 of the tips.

  1. tune off the lights when you are not in the room
  2. don't use too much plastic
  3. turn of the sockets
  4. turn off your microwave when you are not using it

AT WHAT RATES DO DIFFERENT ITEMS DECOMPOSE?

MY INVESTIGATION.

Image result for rates of decomposition

Choose 5 items from the list and investigate them.
leaves
cans
plastic bottles
glass bottles
plastic bags

You need to answer three questions.

How long do they take to decompose?

  1. A glass bottle up to 1 million years to decompose
  2.  Leaves take up to 12 months to decompose
  3. Plastic bottles can take up to 450 years to decompose
  4.  Plastic bags can take up to 1000 years to decompose
  5. Cans take up to 200-400 years to decompose
  1.  Sunlight
  2.  Coal
  3.  Gasses
  4. Sand
  5. Aluminium

science

AIM: TO LOOK AT THE WATER CYCLE AND HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS AFFECTING IT.

Definition:

The water cycle says how water evaporates from the surface of the earth, and then it rises into the atmosphere, cools and condenses into rain or snow in the clouds, and then it does it again.

Scientific words:

  • Evaporation. When water is heated by radiant energy it turns into water vapor.
  • Transpiration. Evaporation from plants.
  • Condensation. When water vapor cools, molecules join together and form clouds.
  • Precipitation. When clouds get heavy the waters falls as rain, sleet, hail, or snow.
  • Acidification: the action or process of making or becoming acidic.

We will be conducting an experiment that looks at the different ways that climate change is affecting the water cycle.

THE WATER CYCLE EXPERIMENT

Bag 1: Normal Water cycle
Bag 2: Water cycle with CO2 added: like Oceans in climate change
Bag 3: Water cycle with ice added: like Antarctica in climate change

Material:

  1.  Plastic bag.
  2.  Vivid marker.
  3. 1 cup of water.
  4.  2 drops of food colouring blue.

Steps:

  1.  Get the bag.
  2.  Get a vivid.
  3.  Draw on the bag.
  4.  Get water and put food colouring.
  5. Hang up and wait.

materials

  1. Litmus paper.
  2. Soda water.
  3. Vivid Marker.
  4. 2 drops food colouring (colour blue).
  5. Hang up.

charlesworth reserve

Next week my class has a trip to Charlesworth Reserve. The classes that are going are (⅞ Al, ⅞ Ts and last but not least ⅞ Wh). We are going to start planting plants to help with trying to get to 1 billion trees.
We are going to be doing that because trees feed off carbon dioxide. That is one reason why we are going in to climate change. Because there is not enough trees to have it all so that is creating the blanket over the earth and that is making all of the antarctic melt and the sea levels are rising.
The government has set a goal to plant up to 1 billion trees by 2028,
we are going to more likely be in climate change in 10 years.
The heat is coming in as it normally would but it isn't bouncing out it is staying in because of the blanket of carbon dioxide because it is not strong enough to get out. This is what we will be doing.
